Curriculum

Brant has developed a COMPREHENSIVE LEARNING CURRICULUM (CLC) that encompasses all of the core components of the Kindergarten and Primary curricula frameworks developed by the Ministry of Education. Our philosophy, however, is to expose children to as wide an array of experiences as possible. To that end, our CLC includes a number of enrichment activities not included in Board programs.

Our CLC could be summarized as follows:

CORE COMPONENTS:

• Language and Literacy – with an emphasis on phonetics and learning to read
• Mathematics – numbers and numeration, measurement, geometry and spatial sense, patterning, data management and probability. Our math teaching resources include the Learning Carpet and Montessori math materials.
• Science and Technology
• The Arts – visual arts (painting, drawing, crafts), music, dance and drama
• Personal and Social Development – social skills and manners, conflict resolution, and physical development

• Roots & Shoots - an environmental program, designed in association with Dr. Jane Goodall’s Institute, to teach children care and compassion for animals, the environment and their community
• Wiz-Tech – developed in and for Brant, this program sets ‘challenges’ for children to solve using creative problem-solving skills and basic technological resources
• Computers – our separate computer lab contains eight separate computer systems with software to complement Brant’s Two Year Full-Time Kindergarten program
• French – French lessons start in our Early Learning Department and continue through the Kindergarten program. Many of our graduates go into French Immersion in Grade 1.
• Optional Swimming Lesson Program – an eight week program for children each year in our Kindergarten program (and an eight week program for the same children during the summer)
• Montessori Activities – our wealth of Montessori equipment provides us with opportunities to work with children in the Life Skills, Language, and Mathematics areas, particularly in our Full-Time Kindergarten Program.
